1942 – 2014

WINTHROP — Richard A. Leighton, 71, of Winthrop, died Thursday, March 20, as the result of an automobile accident in Winthrop.

He was born in Lewiston, May 1, 1942, the son of Clarence and Christine (Huston) Leighton. He grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1960. Dick always had an interest in cars and became a mechanic early on. He attended several schools to further his career in auto mechanics. He worked for Dresseley’s and later Barrows for a time before opening his own auto repair business, Leighton’s Garage in 1971.

Dick was a fan of NASCAR and enjoyed the Red Sox and Patriots. He hunted and fished as a younger man.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne (Bisson) Leighton; his sons, John Scott Leighton and his fiancée, Marian King, Richard Leighton, of Buckfield and Marvin Leighton of Greene; his brothers, Clarence Leighton and his wife, Joyce, of Minot, Christopher Leighton and his girlfriend, Luann Bates, of Mechanic Falls, and Ronald Leighton, of Minot; along with several grandchildren.

Dick was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Pam Burlock.
