NEW GLOUCESTER — A two-story home on Lovers Lane was leveled by fire early Thursday morning, according to officials.

Firefighters were dispatched to fight the blaze shortly after 12:30 a.m., according to a report written by New Gloucester Fire Capt. Scott Doyle.

Doyle said that a male homeowner was awakened by smoke detectors and fled to a neighbor’s home.

The building was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and gusty winds and a long, icy driveway made extinguishing the blaze a challenge.

Firefighters used approximately 15,000 gallons of water to put out the fire, according to Doyle. The blaze was under control in about an hour.

It wasn’t immediately known if the house was insured.

Officials don’t believe the fire was suspicious.

Crews from Gray, Pownal, North Yarmouth, Auburn and Durham provided aid.
