The failure of a chairlift drive mechanism at Mt. Abram this past weekend has prompted the Greenwood ski area to change its ticket pricing for the rest of the season. General Manager Dave Scanlon described the problem and the plan in a general e-mail sent out Wednesday evening. Following is an excerpt:

“Sunday afternoon we detected a series of symptoms that has lead us to the determination that the main bearing on the return Bullwheel at the bottom of the Wayback Chair is failing and is no longer safe for operation.

“We have already started scheduling the repairs to begin as soon as possible; however it is unlikely that this will be fixed by the end of the season. The good news is after the overhaul to the drive train of the chair she will be ready to run smoothly for the next 20 years. As a result, we will be operating the Maine T Bar with reduced lift tickets prices.

“Beginning tomorrow through April 5, an all day weekend lift ticket will be just $30, for both the T Bar and Westside.
“At this point, we are considering an extended season by adding two additional weekends, opening the T Bar only with burgers, hot dogs and cold beers in the sun for the weekend of April 12-13 as well as possibly the 19th-20th, weather conditions permitting. We will make an announcement on Thursday morning April 10 and April 17mta for the following weekend. Lift tickets will be just $20.
“We have had amazing snow conditions all over the mountain and the T Bar is running well, ensuring that we will still be able to ski all of our favorite runs on the main mountain late into the spring. “
