AUGUSTA — The Augusta Kids-Kin Grandparents’ Support Group for grandparents and others who are raising a relative’s child has announced that applications are now available for the Bill Giasson Memorial Music Camp Scholarship.

The intent of these scholarships is to encourage and enable deserving students to participate in a music camp experience of their choice.

Students living with a relative other than a parent will receive priority.

Approximately 20 scholarships will be presented again this summer. The amount of the awards will range from $100 to $300.

GSG members chose a music camp scholarship to honor Giasson because he loved children and music. As a teacher, he told his students each day that he was glad to see them and that they were special.

He also loved to sing country music. He knew that music could be an avenue for communication and healing. And he realized that respite from daily stresses could energize families and strengthen them.

He was facilitator to the GSG group for 10 years.

GSG members are supported by both Maine Kids-Kin and Adoptive, Foster and Kinship Families in Maine, which are statewide organizations that offer information and referrals on legal, financial and family challenges and provide many resources for kinship families.
