The second meeting of the newly organized Horticultural Society for these cities was held at the Auburn municipal court room Monday evening with an excellent attendance considering the stormy weather and bad condition of the streets. The object of this society is highly commendable. To inculcate the love of flowers and encourage their planting will mean much for these cities when once its influence is felt. A society of this kind will help stir up a feeling of civic pride and will result in cleaning up many gardens in their place.

With bitter comments about lack of community support, a group that put on the successful Franco-American festival in 1988 decided on Wednesday not to hold the annual event this year. However, the Le Festival Franco de Lewiston et Auburn committee voted to put on a less costly event such as a cabaret or dinner dance in the fall and also said it will work toward staging a 1990 festival. The hand vote appeared to be unanimous among the approximately 16 members of the festival committee present at the evening meeting at the Multi-Purpose center. Lack of volunteers and funds were cited as the two reasons the festival cannot go on this year. Only two members of the public attended the meeting, which had been publicized on area television and radio and in local newspapers. The committee’s treasurer announced the group had raised only about $3,000 for this year’s event. The donations fell far short of the goal of $15,000 to $20,000 the Le Festival group had set for itself.
