BRUNSWICK — Frederic A. Jenks, 98, of Bowdoin, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, at Mid Coast Hospital.

He was born in Lakewood, Ohio, and grew up in the Boston area. He graduated from The Roxbury Latin School in 1934, and M.I.T. in 1938, with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. He worked at National Union Radio Corp. in Newark, N.J., where he designed cathode ray tubes, then at Sperry Gyroscope Co. in Brooklyn, N.Y., Palo Alto, Calif., and Garden City, Long Island, N.Y., during World War II, where he worked on klystron applications, including automatic landing systems.

In 1946, he joined Raytheon Co. in Massachusetts to work on missiles, air-born radar, automatic landing systems and air traffic control. He was a consultant to the Air Force Advisory Board for eight years while at Raytheon. He was also a life senior member of the IEEE, a member of the ARRL (amateur radio — W1GEI), was president of the West Windsor, Vt. Historical Society for two years and did computer work for the town of Brownsville, Vt. for eight years. He was active in church affairs, with affiliations at local churches in towns where he lived and finally with the Brownsville Community Church of Brownsville, Vt.

His wife, Helen, died in 1986 from bone cancer. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Darby E. and Warren W. Mumford of Bowdoin, Patricia L. Jenks and Joan A. Wright of Suffield, Conn., and Vicki S. and Michael J. Wells of Oakville, Wash.; also by his five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
