PORTLAND (AP) — A research project from two Maine marine science centers proposes to predict the movements of species in the Gulf of Maine and provide seasonal forecasts for the lobster industry.

The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/OsTlMN) reported the proposal from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland and the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Studies in East Boothbay is competing for NASA funding.

The Maine Space Grant Consortium chose the project to represent the state in NASA’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. A NASA spokeswoman told the paper up to 15 proposals will receive up to about $11.25 million in funding.

The Maine proposal would attempt to develop models for real-time estimates of the distribution of fish and invertebrates in the gulf using satellites and observations from fishermen and researchers.
