DEAR SUN SPOTS: We need some fairy godmothers! The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County wants to help young women in junior and senior high schools who want to go to the prom but can’t afford the cost of a new gown.
Donate your new or clean, gently worn formal dresses, gowns and accessories by Friday, April 18, and we will give them away for free to high school students in the Androscoggin County area at our Fairy Godmother Prom Gown Giveaway event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St., Auburn.
Can you help? Can you donate a formal dress, gown or accessories to WLU’s Prom Gown Giveaway event?
For more information, call or email me. — Denise, 207-753-0931, [email protected]
DEAR SUN SPOTS: In recognition of National Volunteer Week (April 6-12), please join SeniorsPlus in thanking those who give the best of themselves through volunteerism. The invaluable service they give to those in need cannot be measured.
Thank you to all your readers who volunteer their valuable time to family, friends and programs. We would be unable to provide needed services and programs without the help of volunteers. Thank you! — Heather Chandel, coordinator of Volunteer Services, [email protected]
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for sheet music with words for the songs “I Believe,” Till the End of Time” and “Still.” Thank you for all you do. — No Name, Gray
ANSWER: You could try contacting the music lending library recommended in the next letter, Bagaduce Music Lending Library, P.O. Box 829, Blue Hill, ME 04614, 207-374-5454.
When you write or call them, you will want to provide more information, such as the composer or artist’s name. It appears that there is more than one song with some of the titles you requested. Sun Spots went to a website that lists different songs with the same title and came up with several for “I Believe.”
If you want just the lyrics, Sun Spots may be able to provide those in the column (depending on copyright), but she needs to know what version. Write back with who sang it and about when.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: For Gregg Perry (April 2), I have some other suggestions for his 45-speed records. As you said in your column, the market to sell vinyl records isn’t very lucrative. If he’s looking to donate them, rather than to sell them, there are a couple of options.
Here at the Franco-American Collection at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College we do collect French records, especially any produced locally, but also music from France and Canada. We have quite a significant library of French music now, which visitors to the Collection are welcome to stop by and listen to.
The Franco-American Collection is at 51 Westminster Street in Lewiston, and I can be reached at 207-753-6545 or [email protected] . Our website is www.usm.maine.edu/franco.
Alternatively, a community radio station might be interested. Many have switched to CDs, but some still use vinyl. WMPG in Portland is run out of USM. They take records both to play and to add to their annual sale. You can reach them at 207-780-4424 or [email protected]. Their website is www.wmpg.org.
WYAR is the Heritage Radio Society based in Yarmouth. They would likely be interested in any of the older records you might have (up to the 1960s). You can contact them at 207-650-0581 or [email protected]. Their website is www.wyar.org.
Other readers might have further suggestions for community radio stations that would take donations. If any of your readers have sheet music to donate, again, the Franco-American Collection is interested in anything in French or by a local Franco-American.
For everything else, the Bagaduce Music Lending Library in Blue Hill is the best source. Call them at 207-374-5454, or visit www.bagaducemusic.org. — James Myall, coordinator, Franco-American Collection, [email protected]
