RUMFORD — Andra Beauchesne, president of Friends of the Rumford Library, announced the launch of the new community-wide Rumford Library Poetry Program from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24.
“We’re happy to be starting the program during National Poetry Month,” Beauchesne said.
“Our committee finalized plans for the first poetry event yesterday,” she said. Other Poetry Program committee members are Library Director Luke Sorensen, and Friends members Jenn Cohen, Jan MacFarlane and Linda Macgregor.
“We aim to involve River Valley residents of all ages and interests,” Sorensen said. The committee hopes to attract poetry fans, would-be poets and poets.
“I have an idea there are lots of poets in our community,” said Jane MacFarlane. She has been writing poetry for many years.
The committee plans to alternate between informal gatherings — the April 24 event is one of those — and guest poets reading and talking about their works. Former Maine Poet Laureate Betsy Sholl is on board for a guest reading; and the committee is reaching out to other Maine poets. Wesley McNair, the present Maine Poet Laureate, and Richard Blanco are among those the committee hopes to bring to the Rumford Library.
Over the next weeks, posters and newspaper listings will promote the new program.
