LEWISTON — Applications are available for the Jordan Handy Scholarship, which recognizes an outstanding senior Culinary Arts student at Lewiston Regional Technical Center.

Founded by Jordan Handy, a graduate of the LRTC, the scholarship will honor a graduating senior in the LRTC’s Green Ladle program. Students from the sending schools, Lewiston, Edward Little, Leavitt Regional, Lisbon, Oak Hill and Poland Regional, are eligible to apply.

Handy, an alumnus of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., created the scholarship to show his gratitude to Chef Dan Caron and The Green Ladle for giving him the skills and incentive he needed to attend The Culinary Institute of America, the world’s premier culinary college.

The recipient will receive a one-time award of $500. A Jordan Handy Scholar has demonstrated a passion for the culinary arts, character, leadership, a commitment to service and a career in the culinary arts.

“The moment I walked into the kitchen at The CIA, I realized that I got there not only because of my own hard work but because of excellent instruction I received from Chef Caron, The Green Ladle, my parents and many others,” Handy said. “Chef Caron and The Green Ladle gave me the skills and incentive to attend The CIA and I knew I had to find a way to repay them by giving back to my community.”

Applicants must be accepted into a two- or four-year program in culinary arts or baking and pastry and have attained a 2.75 GPA for all high school course work to date.

“A community must invest in its young people and I want to do my part,” Handy said. “Wherever my career takes me, Lewiston will always be home. From the time I was a little kid, my parents have always told me to remember where I came from and now I understand what they meant.”

Applications are available through the guidance offices of the sending schools or by contacting the Scholarship Committee at [email protected]. Applications must be postmarked no later than May 1.
