CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) — One of Maine’s most popular tourist destinations may soon be smoke-free.
The Cape Elizabeth Town Council is holding a hearing Monday to discuss a proposal to ban tobacco use at Fort Williams Park — home of Portland Head Light.
Under the proposal, anyone caught smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes or e-cigarettes or using chewing tobacco would be fined $250. If approved, the ban would be in place by summer.
The council in 2008 rejected a similar measure in favor of signs asking people to refrain from smoking. However, the Fort Williams Advisory Commission supports a ban because of concerns about secondhand smoke and littering.
Commission Chairman William Brownell told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1sZLXJe ) this is good time to talk about a smoking ban because of improvements at the park.
