1932 – 2014
AUBURN — Clarence Oakland “Pop” Holbrook, 81, of Skillings Corner Road in Auburn, died Sunday, April 13, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
He was born in Auburn on July 24, 1932, the son of the late Oakland and Florence (Hustis) Holbrook. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Edward Little High School, Class of 1952. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He married the love of his life, Judith “Judy” Fuller, on June 23, 1962; they settled in Auburn to raise their family. Clarence worked for Auburn Last Shoe Co., Jones & Vining, Agway and Reid’s Small Engine Repair.
Clarence loved to spend time fishing on his boat, whether it be mackerel fishing at Bailey’s Island, up at Moosehead or nearby at Lake Auburn. He also went on a couple winter camping trips on the Allagash in his younger years.
He enjoyed tinkering on small engines and working on gas engines with his good friend, Dick Vye, with whom he went to many engine shows. Clarence took great pride in his lawn and spent many hours tending to it. Most times when he was relaxing at home, you would find his cat, Buckwheat, on his lap.
Clarence is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judy Holbrook, of Auburn; a daughter, Rebecca Hicks and her husband, Michael, of West Blocton Ala.; a son, Alan Holbrook and his wife, Robin Rockett, of Turner; and three grandchildren he was very proud of, Nickolaus and Jacob Vickerson of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Cassidy Holbrook of Auburn.
The family would like to send a very special thank-you to the entire staff at the Hospice House for the wonderful care given to Clarence in his last days.
