JAY — Selectpersons are setting up a committee to look at the town’s 397 street lights and make recommendations to turn off about 25 percent of them.

The street light budget was reduced from $62,615 to $48,000 in the 2014-15 town budget, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere previously said. The total proposed town budget is $5.57 million.

Besides the town’s 397 street lights, there are 18 special facility lights in town, she said.

Selectperson Pearl Cook and Vice Chairman Justin Merrill volunteered to serve on the panel. Merrill suggested there should be no more than seven members.

Darren Roundy, a firefighter, has volunteered to serve on the panel. The board also wants a police officer, preferably a Jay resident.

Residents of the community interested in filling the three remaining openings are asked to call the Town Office at 897-6785.
