FARMINGTON  — A Franklin County grand jury indicted a Rhode Island man Tuesday, accusing him of sexually assaulting a woman in Franklin County in 2013.

Wilson Alves, 30, of Pawtucket, R.I., and formerly of Jay, was indicted on one count each of felony gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.

Alves was arrested on a Jay Police Department warrant by a Rhode Island law enforcement agency Feb. 6, acting Jay police Chief Richard Caton IV previously said.

Caton conducted an investigation after the sexual assault was reported in May and sought a warrant for Alves, he had said.

Alves was initially charged with felony gross sexual assault but a second charge was added by state prosecutors.

A conviction on the charge of gross sexual assault carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and up to a $50,000 fine.

Alves has been held without bail at a jail since his arrest.
