1923 – 2014
AUBURN — George L. Hopkins, 90, of 166 Pond Road, Lewiston, passed away on Thursday, April 10, after a long and fulfilling life.
He was born in Lewiston on July 26, 1923, a son of Dora and John Hopkins. As with many men and women of this era, he served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in England. After his service, he returned home to finish high school and met and married his wife of 65 years, Dorothy E. (Kimball) Hopkins.
George was an avid athlete and played on several baseball, hockey and softball teams over the course of his life. His love of sports was shared by his wife and passed on to his three children. In particular, George and Dot shared a love of dancing and golf. Through those pastimes, they met and enjoyed the company of several people, both in Lewiston and in Brooksville, Fla., where they spent winters for 25 years, until just recently.
George retired from New England Telephone/Verizon in 1988, after 40 years of service, at which point he became an even more avid golfer and shared that passion with his children and grandchildren for the remainder of his life. He was a charter member of Fairlawn Country Club in East Poland and had many fond memories playing there, particularly his hole-in-one on the 13th hole in 1986, as well as one in Florida a couple of years later.
George is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Jean and husband, Jim Ropella, of Lewiston; his son, Daniel, of Lewiston; his daughter, Kathryn and her husband, Scott Dillenback, of Portland; four grandchildren, Justin Ropella of Manassas Park, Va., Ryan Hopkins and fiancée, Heather Atkinson, of Parkersburg, W.Va., Ashlee and husband, Alex Croyle, of Fort Riley, Kan., and Jordan Ropella of Lewiston; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Sofia Croyle; and three sisters, Helen Briggs of Rochester, N.Y., Betty Foss of Lewiston and Margie and her husband, Ben Lizotte, of Auburn.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, John and Robert.
The family would like to thank the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice House, in particular Barbara Lucas, CNA, and Molly Webster, RN, his personal care givers at home.
