1929 – 2014

AUBURN — Herbert M. Hinkley, 84, of Turner, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 18, at the Hospice House in Auburn after a brief illness with his loving family at his side.

A lifelong resident of Turner, Herbert was born in Lewiston at Central Maine General Hospital on August 12, 1929. He was raised by his parents, Edward B. Hinkley and Myrna Record Hinkley, on their family farm on Upper Street. He was educated in the Turner School System and graduated from Leavitt Institute in the class of 1947. He was especially fond of recalling his achievements as a member of the famed power 6 man football team.

In December 1950, he married his only true love, Christine Warren Hinkley of Buckfield. If ever there was a faithful loving husband it was Herbert. Their marriage stayed strong for more than 63 years. They raised their two children, David Edward Hinkley and Cathy Hinkley Pratt, in the Turner home on Lower Street. Christine is still proud to call this her home today. Herbert was proud to recount stories of his cross country trip he and a couple of his friends took shortly after graduation, but he missed his sweetheart Christine and came back home to be married and raise a family.

Herbert loved his children and later his grandchildren. He was a business owner in partnership with his brother, Harold, in H and H Trucking Company, which he faithfully ran for over 40 years. He loved playing golf and spending time playing and watching sports with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid Red Sox fan watching as many games as he could.

Herbert was a founding member of Calvary Baptist Church in Turner and served many years as a Deacon. His greatest joys were reading his bible and spreading the gospel of Jesus with his family and community.
