SOUTH PARIS — Janice J. Fernald, 83, of South Paris, died Friday, April 18, at Market Square Health Care Center.

She was born in Lewiston on July 12, 1930, the daughter of Frank and Louise Sawyer Jackson. Janice graduated from Edward Little High School and Farmington State Teachers College, earning her master’s degree in Springfield, Mass. She was a physical education teacher at Walton School in Auburn and a special education teacher at Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls.

Janice attended South Paris Congregational Church. She enjoyed reading and was very social. Her family was her life. She married Bert Fernald on April 15, 1961; he passed away on Nov. 17, 1993.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally Harkins and husband, Bob, of Bethel and grandsons, Sawyer and Chase Harkins, both of Bethel; her daughter, Mary Beth Fernald, of West Poland and grandchildren, Sara, Michelle, Megan and Christopher and great-grandson, Blake; her son, Jim Fernald and his wife, Peggy, of West Poland and grandchildren, Robert and Isabelle; and several cousins.
