LEWISTON — In the early days of Christianity, all of Easter week was one continuous feast, a week of intense happiness and joy, blending comedy and spirituality. God delights in laughter, welcoming it as part of worship.

Sunday’s service at 10:30 Sunday, April 27, at Calvary Church, 59 Sabattus St., will continue the Easter story, celebrating the greatest practical joke of all time, when God had the last laugh over death.

The Rev. Casey Collins reports that, “After Easter we now know the glee of Jesus, the mirth of God and the laughter of the Holy Spirit, this day and 24/7. Amen.”

God loves a good party. Jesus performed the first miracle at a wedding in Cana, turning water into wine. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus says that the overjoyed father threw a big party for his returning son. “We are going to have a feast, a celebration,” the father declared, “because this son of mine was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found.” (Luke 15:23-24)

Collins encourages those attending to wear colorful clothes, bring jokes and a sense of humor as there will be “comedy breaks” throughout the service.

All are invited.

Her favorite theological quote? B.K. Chesteron said it: “Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.”

Calvary is an open and affirming reconciling congregation.
