1930 – 2014
LEWISTON — Evelyn Louise Webber Norton, 84, of Kingfield, died on Wednesday, April 30, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
She was born on March 20, 1930, in Madrid at the Hathaway Place, the daughter of Roosevelt and Lillian (Sargent) Webber. She was a graduate of the Dunham Elementary School in Madrid, Phillips High School, Class of 1948, and Husson College, Class of 1950. She received her certified professional insurance woman’s degree.
Evelyn was a very athletic person, playing many sports in high school and basketball in college. At Husson, she was co-captain of the basketball team and was chosen outstanding player of the year in 1949. She coached the Phillips High School girls basketball team of 1952 to 1953.
In 1950, she married Floyd J. Norton at the Reeds Mill Church in Madrid, and they had three children, Gerry, Kevin and Deronda.
For several years, Floyd and Evelyn owned and operated Echo Valley Lodge in Phillips. She was employed in the insurance industry for 40 years, having worked for the Carlisle Agency in Phillips, Emil E. Winter Agency in Kingfield, owned her own agency, Norton Insurance, and worked for Weber Insurance Agency of Kingfield and Farmington.
Evelyn was very active in her community. She was a member of the Kingfield Baptist Church, Madrid Ladies Circle, Reeds Mill Baptist Church Parish, Madrid Historical Society, Phillips and Kingfield Historical Societies, Stanley Museum of Kingfield, Kingfield Evening Extension, Hewey-Coffin Post Auxiliary, Stitchers in the Snow Quilters, Maine Mountain Quilters, the Pine Tree Quilters Guild, Seacoast Basket Makers of Spring Hill, Florida and Quilt Makers of Ridge Manor, Florida. She was a former member of Sherburne OES of Phillips, past district deputy of the OES, corporator of Webster Library of Kingfield, director of the Farmington Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Norton-Wuori Post Auxiliary, Kingfield Water District trustee and president of PATHS of the Gov. Baxter School for the Deaf.
She is survived by her husband, Floyd Norton of Kingfield; her three children, Gerry W. Norton and wife, Jan, of Phillips, Kevin F. Norton and wife, Roberta, of Madrid and Deronda Duchesne and husband, John, of Sebago; her brothers, Malcolm Webber and wife, Joanne, of Madrid and Melvin Webber of Madrid; six grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Virginia Roy.
