LEWISTON — On May 11, Mother’s Day, the public is invited to take a stand to stop violence against women on either side of the James Longley Memorial Bridge between 11 a.m. and noon.
People are invited to stand for sisters, daughters, mothers, friends, spouses, cousins and girlfriends.
The event is being organized by L A Women Rising, which is a growing network of women in the Twin Cities who are working to stop violence against women.
Inspired by the international “One Billion Rising” movement, it is spearheaded by Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, Safe Voices, the YWCA of Central Maine and The Center for Wisdom’s Women.
This is the second event sponsored by the collaborative, the first being a rally that was held on April 1: “Violence Against Women, It’s No Joke!”
Signs for participants to hold will be provided and participants will be invited to take a pledge to stop the violence.
The event is not limited to women. In fact, organizers hope men will join the campaign.
A future “Call to Men” event is in the planning stages, to take place in June, on or around Father’s Day.
