LEWISTON — Local youth are invited to participate in the annual National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 7.

Students attending the Geiger Elementary School should meet at 8 a.m. at the Pettingill School Park (formerly Pettingill Elementary School) on the corner of College and Little Streets where they will proceed to the Geiger School.

Organizer Bruce Hall has been actively involved with the event since it began two years ago as a project to teach children about bike safety, while encouraging them to have fun and be active.

Hall says last year over 30 students and parents rode to Geiger School from the Pettingill site. He said, “The riders all had Clif Bars donated by Busytown Bikes. They also had an opportunity to learn about bike safety from the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.”

This year Joe Phillipon from the Lewiston Police Department and Dominic Giampaolo from Busytown Bikes will lead the “bike train” to Geiger. Hall stated, “I hope that it can have a growing significance in the future of Lewiston. Perhaps next year we will be able to include more schools.”

Friends of Pettingill welcome all bikers to the new city park and look forward to many other events that help bring together members of all ages of our neighborhood and community.
