PORTLAND — Trailing in fundraising, Maine Gov. Paul LePage hopes a visit by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie this week will raise campaign cash — and rally his conservative base.
LePage’s campaign says fundraising has been hampered by rules preventing contributions from lobbyists or business or individuals that employ lobbyists. But those restrictions are no longer in play now that the legislative session is over.
The fundraiser on Wednesday in Portland will be closed to the press.
Brent Littlefield, LePage’s senior political advisor, said voters shouldn’t expect a dramatic change in terms of the LePage campaign’s intensity because it’s still early in the campaign season. He said Mainers are more interested in their summer plans “than a politician popping up in their driveway.”
