100 years ago, 1914
The Androscoggin Mills of Lewiston have placed an order for a new water wheel unit. This unit is to have a capacity of 1,000-horse power under a 37-foot head and to consist of a pair of wicket gate wheels. The power will be taken from these water wheels by several pulleys. This mechanism has been used chiefly on hydro-electric installations, and is the first installation of its kind in a New England textile mill.

50 years ago, 1964
The Auburn Superintending School Committee Wednesday night named Alfred N. Savignano as the new principal at Edward Little High School. Savignano, presently principal at Walton Junior High School, will replace Arnold G. Westerberg whose resignation from the ELHS position was accepted Wednesday night. Westerberg has accepted a position with the University of Maine’s Continuing Education Division. Savignano has been a member of the Auburn school system since 1950 and has held the Walton School principalship since 1957. His first assignment in the Auburn school system was as a biology teacher at ELHS.

25 years ago, 1989
The Lewiston-Auburn Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will observe its 104th anniversary on Sunday with an open house at its outer Hotel Road shelter in Auburn. Organized in 1885, the Lewiston-Auburn SPCA concerns itself with animal welfare in Androscoggin County and is one of the oldest such institutions in the country. In the last year alone, the Lewiston-Auburn shelter has provided refuge for 3,766 dogs and cats, of which 1,018 were adopted and 209 were returned to their owners.
