The committee named by Lewiston Mayor Roland L. Marcotte to organize a summer festival in the Textile City, planned as an annual event designed to attract visitors, met for the first time in the mayor’s office this morning. Headed by Raymond Geiger, the committee members tossed around several ideas as to what could be scheduled during a week-long festival, such as auctions and antique sales, bean suppers, street dances, and cultural activities centering around the Bates College area. The tentative date has been unofficially set as the week of July 10, but this date could be changed, depending on a well-known radio personality, Don McNeil, who may broadcast his morning breakfast show from here during the festival. There may also be several band concerts and “A Day in Quebec” promotion, as suggested by Chairman Geiger, which would be of interest to Canadians visiting Lewiston or surrounding communities.

Reading. writing, arithmetic and banking? Starting next September. about 15 seniors will learn to become tellers in an Androscoggin Savings Bank branch in the Lewiston Regional Vocational Center. They’ll work one period in the branch and study banking one period in the classroom. And they’ll provide a service for people at the center and Lewiston High School. “Students, faculty, anyone within the school community will be able to do banking on campus,” said Joseph Palleschi, the vocational center’s coordinator for marketing education. “In fact, we will encourage it.”
