1919 – 2014

AUBURN — Alphena E. Richard, 94, formerly of 216 Grove St., Lewiston, died on Wednesday, May 7, at Clover Health Care in Auburn, where she had been a resident for the past four years.

Born in Lewiston on Nov. 23, 1919, she was the daughter of Adolphe and Exilia Nolin Bernier. She was educated in Holy Family School and she married Joseph Richard on June 29, 1936, in Holy Family Church; he passed away on April 3, 2012.

For many years, she worked with her husband in the family business, Joseph Richard & Sons Landscaping. A talented seamstress, she loved sewing for her grandchildren, but her favorite activity was always dancing with her husband.

A member of Holy Family Church, Prince of Peace Parish, she is survived by two sons, Roger and wife, Claire, of Harpswell and Paul and wife, Vivian, of Lewiston; a brother, Roger “Fern” Bernier and wife, Rita, of Rhode Island; six grandchildren, Dr. Mark Richard, Jeanne and husband, David Gray, Judith Richard, Lisa Richard, Dina and husband, Lauriston Jackson, and Danielle Richard; three great-grandchildren, Wendy and Keith Gray and Mikayla Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Lionel and Paul Bernier; three sisters, Simone Fleming, Laura Lizotte and Anita Lajoie; a niece, Lorraine Levesque; a nephew, Jerome Lizotte; and a sister-in-law, Gilberte Bernier.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Clover Health Care, especially Sandy Robbins; the staff at Kerry Place and Clare Place; Dr. Thomas Hattan and his staff; and Margaret Quinn and the staff of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for the loving care they gave Alphena during her final years.
