1919 – 2014

LEWISTON — Anne Lucille McCann, of New Gloucester, died Wednesday, May 7.

Lucille was born in Metcalf, Ga., on May 8, 1919, the eldest daughter of Hubert H. and Anne Bell Barwick Sr. She was educated in Thomasville, Ga., and graduated from Thomasville High School, Class of 1937. She went on to school, working summers in resorts up and down the East coast.

While working at Ocean Side Resort, she met the love of her life, C. Leon McCann Jr., and they were married in Thomasville, Ga., on April 21, 1940. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Maine. Living in several places in New Gloucester, they finally settled at the McCann Homestead on Bald Hill Road. It was there they raised their three sons, John, Bill and Dick.

Lucille worked several jobs in her lifetime, including B. Peck & Co. and Cole Farms, and retired from the Bates College book store. However, after retirement, being a people-person, she went back to work as a hostess at Cole Farms, a job she dearly loved; it kept her in touch with her friends — especially her good friend, Merilyn.

She was also active in the town, PTA, Room Mother, Farm Bureau, Evening Guild, past matron of Golden Sheaf Chapter and she regularly attended the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester. She loved New Gloucester and all the people in it. She was actually attending a town meeting when stricken ill on May 5.

Lucille never let her age stand in the way of what she wanted to do. She drove herself to church, appointments, shopping with her friends and anywhere within reason. Her greatest personal love was her family. Gram, as she was mostly called, was always at family functions, baseball games, basketball games, soccer games, recitals, graduations, weddings and all. She was a fixture of family activity and everyone loved her.

Aside from family, her second love was her garden and she could hardly wait for spring to come so that she could get out there and groom it into the beautiful spot it is. Each year brought additions and revisions that kept her busy until fall.

She returned to Georgia almost every year after retirement and enjoyed spending time with her siblings, Hubert, Bill and Christine, all of whom she was very close to.

Lucille, “Gram,” was a very loving, caring, one of a kind person and made the world a better place to live.

She is survived by her son, Dick; daughters-in law, Jill, Pat and Lynda; her sister, Christine; grandchildren, Linda, Pam (Mike), Donna (Steve), Billy, Terry (Frank), Heidi (Drew), Beth (Clint), Rob (Sarah), Rick (Sarah), Dennis (Lisa), Jodi (Todd), Dan (Wendy), Jon (Angela) and Christy (Paul); great-grandchildren, Seth, Lucas, Megan, Mandi, Deni, Matt, Jenny, Emily, Colin, Jackson, Logan, William, Ricky D., Nick, Dennis, David, Thomas, Brandin, Trevor, Dylan, Cody, Ben, Victoria, Jonny, Zach, Matty, Isaac, Oliver, Jordan, Solomon and Levi; as well as great-great-grandchildren, Blake, Kamron, Avy, Anna, Tyler, Gabriel, Chakotay, Gavin, Bryan, Max and Bella; many nieces and nephews; and a special sister-in-law, Lois.

Lucille was predeceased by her husband, Leon; her sons, John and Bill; and her siblings, Bill and Hubert.
