MACHIASPORT (AP) — Maine officials are not commenting on the death of an inmate nearing release from the Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport.

Thirty-two-year-old Phillip Kay died at the prison Friday.

Department of Corrections spokesman Scott Fish said Friday that state police are investigating Kay’s death, but would not say how Kay died or whether his death is considered suspicious.

The Portland Press Herald reports a person answering phones at the medical examiner’s office Saturday had no information on the death and a state police spokesman did not return a call.

Kay was due to be released next year after serving part of a 12-year sentence for aggravated assault. Part of the sentence was to be served behind bars and the rest on supervised release.
