AUGUSTA — A 21-year-old Weld woman was killed and her boyfriend suffered a broken neck in a car crash early Sunday morning.

Karen Schwartz was heading east on Route 17, also known as Eastern Avenue, just before 3 a.m. Sunday when the 2006 Pontiac G6 she was driving went off the road and struck a tree, Augusta police Lt. Chris Massey said Sunday afternoon.

Schwartz died at the scene.

When emergency personnel arrived, Schwartz’s 26-year-old boyfriend, Kasey Toothaker, was walking around, according to Massey. Toothaker, also of Weld, subsequently was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with a broken neck. He was in critical condition late Sunday afternoon, according to a nursing supervisor at the hospital.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Maine State Police are investigating.
