PARIS — Paris police Chief Michael Madden said Tuesday that phone records of people police believe are involved in the hit-and-run death of Xavier Fuentes of Turner have been subpoenaed.
The 16-year-old Leavitt Area High School student was run down by a vehicle on Saturday evening, March 15, on an unlit stretch of Route 117 between a small rest stop and Brett Hill Road.
His body was found in the middle of the travel lane by a passing motorist. Fuentes was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The teen had attended a movie at Flagship Cinema in Oxford with family members earlier in the evening but left and began walking to his grandparents’ home in Turner when he was hit, police said at the time.
Madden said Tuesday that the subpoena was granted in Oxford County Superior Court last week and called it a “normal course” of any such investigation.
“To avoid compromising investigative advantage, I will not discuss whose phone records we are seeking or how they may be related to the crime or the suspects,” Madden said.
Earlier this month, police identified two suspects who Madden said have been uncooperative but are still under surveillance. One was identified as a resident of Auburn, the second as living in the Lewiston area.
At that time, Madden said police executed search warrants and seized a car in Lewiston, a car from a Hertz car rental business in Bangor and evidence at a suspect’s house in Auburn.
Officers from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Maine State Police, Lewiston and Auburn police departments and Oxford County Sheriff’s Office have assisted the Paris Police Department in its investigation.
Madden said Tuesday both suspects are still in the area.
