JAY —  Spruce Mountain High School activities for the week of May 24 to 30 have been announced.

The band will meet at 7:30 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the Jay Police Department to march to the Jay Hill Cemetery. At 9:30 a.m. they will meet at Memco to line up for the Memorial Day Parade.

Brownies and Books will meet at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, in the SMHS Library. Members will discuss “Ship Breaker” by Paolo Bacigalupi.

The book takes place in a futuristic world where a teenaged Nailer scavenges copper wiring from grounded oil tankers for a living. When he finds a beached clipper ship with a girl in the wreckage, he has to decide if he should strip the ship for its wealth or rescue the girl.

The next book will be “Infidel” by Ayaan Hirsi, which the group will read over the summer. It is an autobiography about the author’s traditional Muslim childhood in Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Kenya.

Brownies and Books welcomes community members along with students and staff in the book discussions. Call Suzanne Cole at the high school (897-4336) for more information.

Ken Landry and Aurelie Merrill, yearbook advisers, will host an assembly and yearbook dedication at 1 p.m. Friday, May 30. Yearbooks will be handed out to students who have pre-purchased. There are some extra yearbooks that can be purchased for $55. This year’s yearbook editors are Kasey Richards and Heather Castonguay.

Seniors will take final exams over the course of four days: Friday, May 30, Periods 1 and 2, Green Day; Monday, June 2, Periods 3 and 4, Black Day; Tuesday, June 3, Periods 3 and 4, Green Day; and Wednesday, June 4, Periods 1 and 2, Black Day.
