MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — The Ball State University Board of Trustees has selected Paul Ferguson to become the school’s next president.

Ferguson has been the president of the University of Maine since 2011. Before that, he was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and a professor of pharmacology and toxicology there for five years.

The trustees called a special board Thursday afternoon to vote on the appointment of Ferguson to succeed Jo Ann Gora. Gora is retiring in June after 10 years leading the 18,000-student university in Muncie.

Urban planning professor Eric Kelly, a former University Senate chairman, told The Star Press that Gora has been terrific at raising money for Ball State and Ferguson must make that his main focus job amid state funding declines.
