WEST PARIS — The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a late-morning fire that damaged a single-family home Tuesday.

Owner Shelly Swan escaped unharmed but was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway for an unrelated medical issue, fire Chief Norm St. Pierre said.

Firefighters from six towns responded to 3 Hidden Lane, off North Paris Road, at 11:17 a.m., Pierre said. The fire was contained to the basement, which included a bedroom, but there was extensive smoke damage throughout the single-story home, which had three bedrooms.

St. Pierre said the cause of the fire is undetermined, but Swan said she had a candle lit in the basement.

St. Pierre said

fighters had a tough time accessing the basement through the front door and ended up bringing hoses through the bulkhead. Water came from a hydrant at Trap Corner and four tankers.

Crews cleared the scene about 90 minutes later.

“We had a good save. The crews did a good job,” St. Pierre said.
