AUGUSTA (AP) — An Oakland man charged with seriously injuring his girlfriend’s 2-year-old twin girls has been ordered held on $50,000 bail.

David Devine did not enter a plea at his first appearance Tuesday in Kennebec County Superior Court on two counts of aggravated assault.

Police were called to the couple’s home on May 11 by the girl’s mother, who told investigators she returned from work to find her daughters injured. Paramedics told investigators both girls had several injuries, including one with a broken arm and the other with a broken leg. The twins have since been released from the hospital.

The 25-year-old Devine said the twins’ 4-year-old brother had attacked them with a plastic bat.

Devine’s mother told the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1osLGOt ) outside court that her son did not hurt the twins.
