BRIDGTON – Police said Wednesday night they were trying to determine what caused a school bus to slide off Route 117 and into a patch of trees.

The children on board were not injured, officials said.

It was not immediately clear where the bus was headed when it slipped off the highway near Blake Lane. The bus was from the Lake Region School District which serves Bridgton, Casco, Naples and Sebago.

Traffic backed up in both directions as emergency crews responded and cleanup began. The bus was towed from the scene.
