ELLSWORTH (AP) — Maine police officials say a man in Ellsworth has been shot after an 18-hour stand-off with police.

Maine police spokesman Stephen McCausland says the 50-year-old Jeffrey Barnard man was shot by a state trooper at about 6:30 Sunday morning. He said Barnard was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he was still undergoing surgery late Sunday.

McCausland said Barnard was shot by Trooper Scott Duff — a 17-year veteran of the force and member of the tactical team.

Barnard’s 56-year-old wife, Vicki Barnard, who was with him at the time of the shooting was not injured, police said.

The standoff began at about noon Saturday at a camper on North Main Street.

The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating the shooting.
