Falmouth High School may be the new school on the Class A block, but make no mistake, the Yachtsmen will be the presumptive favorites in both the boys’ and girls’ team tournaments when things get rolling this week.

Long dominant at the Class B level, Falmouth moved into Class A this season. All three of the team’s singles players, both on the boys’ and girls’ teams, were seeded this past weekend in the annual MPA singles tourney.

Falmouth’s main competition for the Western A crown in the boys’ bracket will be Deering, which also went unbeaten playing an SMAA schedule (Falmouth plays in the WMC). The Falmouth girls are also No. 2 in West A, and are also 12-0, matching No. 1 Portland’s unbeaten mark.

In Eastern A, despite losing only twice, the Lewiston girls have slotted into the fourth position and will host Brewer in a quarterfinal tilt. The Lewiston boys will travel to Brunswick as the No. 7 seed.

The Mt. Blue girls eked their way into the playoffs in eastern A, as well, and will travel to Brunswick, while the Cougars’ boys’ squad drew the fourth seed and will host No. 5 Mt. Ararat in a quarterfinal.

In Class B, Spruce Mountain is the lone tri-county boys’ squad in the bracket. As the No. 5 team, the Phoenix will travel to Lincoln Academy for a quarterfinal matchup. In the girls’ brackets, Lisbon slots in at No. 4 and will host Cape Elizabeth in a quarterfinal, while No. 6 Spruce Mountain will travel to No. 3 Lincoln Academy.

St. Dominic Academy is the talk of the Western Class C girls’ tourney this year, thanks in part to top freshman Bethany Hammond, who just completed a run to the state singles tourney semifinal round. The Saints are unbeaten and will host Dirigo in a quarterfinal. Winthrop made it into the tourney as the No. 4 seed and will host Boothbay.

On the boys’ side of Class C, Dirigo completes a 9-2 season in the MVC and is the No. 2 seed, edging out No. 3 Monmouth. The Cougars will host No. 7 NYA in a quarterfinal. Monmouth will host Wiscasset. St. Dom’s snuck in at No. 8 and will travel to No. 1 Hall-Dale in the opening round.
