PARIS — Hoping to boost the convenience of enjoying Moore Park, the town is asking voters to approve construction of a formal parking area.

On June 14, residents will be asked to authorize capital-improvement funding earmarked for the project.

The Maine Department of Transportation has agreed to preliminary plans calling for a gravel parking lot along Route 26 at the north end of the park near the playground.

The plans show 10 to 12 parking spaces, with gravel fill laid over the current dirt lot, according to Town Manager Amy Bernard.

The impetus for the change began last summer following an “ideas night,” at which residents suggested providing a more defined and aesthetically pleasing space for park visitors.

Moore Park’s open, green space plays host to a number of outdoor concerts and the Moore Park Art Show, as well as being a picnic destination for residents.

Previously, Bernard said that the site’s popularity, coupled with a limited number of parking spaces, has caused cars to overflow from the dirt lot and park on the grass.

In April, selectmen agreed to post signs asking residents not to park on the grass.

If approved, the town’s Highway Department would begin work after summer road maintenance work has been completed, likely in October.

The cost for the project is approximately $8,000, Bernard said.

The lot will be open spring, summer and fall, but will not be plowed in winter, she said.
