If pending negotiations go thru, Lewiston will have, at least, one fine new theatre and possibly two within very short time. Gentlemen representing a syndicate interested in motion picture houses have been in the city this week to inspect the site of the old Central garage, Main street, with a view to erecting a splendid theatre devoted to film drama.

From what has already been done it is felt safe in saying that if an agreement is reached it would mean the erection of a theatre here such as no other city in Maine, it not in New England, could boast. The other theatre may be put up by the Keith people. H. L. Watkins. Representatives of the firm were in the city on Wednesday to inspect two sites for a theatre.

Seen any $2 bills lately in Lewiston and Auburn? If you haven’t, then you’re in for a grand premiere of a parade of these scarce bills. The Bates Manufacturing Company, in a dramatic effort to show the importance of its payrolls on the economy of the two cities, literally will flood the area with $2 bills next week. Bates’ Lewiston employees next week will be paid with $2 bills instead of by check as usual. He estimated the Company would distribute between 50,000 and 60,000 such bills before the week was over.

A proposal to create an Androscoggin County charter study commission won the support Tuesday of the county legislative delegation. But county legislators stopped short of establishing specific elements of county government that should be especially addressed in the commission’s work. It was the committee that asked if special study areas should be set forth in its report on the bill. “If we set out areas of study,” said Sen. R. Peter Whitmore, R-Auburn, “they might restrict themselves to those areas.” There was a proposal that the delegation become involved in the study process but that drew objections from committee members who want to disengage themselves from the county operation.
