AUBURN — Auburn Public Library will kick off its 2014 Teen Summer Reading Program on June 16.
Using this year’s national theme, “Spark a Reaction @ Your Library,” the focus will be on science. Over the eight-week period (June 16-Aug. 8), teen book displays and activities will feature physics, chemistry, environmental science and forensics.
The library will welcome University of Maine’s “Mainely Physics” Road Show from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, June 16. This program will ask “what is physics?” Participants should leave with a greater knowledge of what physics is and why it is vital to the fields of modern science and engineering.
The program will consist of an exploration of the history of science and a fast-paced set of demonstrations from physical science, which will use volunteers from the audience. Although aimed at teens, interested adults are also welcome to attend.
Teens may sign up for the Summer Reading Program at this activity on June 16, or anytime thereafter by stopping by the Reference Desk on the second floor of the library. Just for signing up to participate, they are entered into the grand prize drawing. First prize is a Boston day trip for two; second prize is a pizza party for 10. The drawing will take place at the Summer Reading Finale on Friday, Aug. 8.
During the eight-week program, teens will keep a reading log. For every five books read, teens will have their choice of a voucher for either a small ice cream cone from Dairy Joy, an appetizer from Pizza Hut or a small order of French fries from McDonald’s. This will also give them another entry into the grand prize drawing.
In addition to this kickoff event, there are many other featured and regular programs to choose from – a total of 23 – and attendance at each one gets teens another entry into the Aug. 8 drawing.
