AUGUSTA — Maine author James Witherell will talk about his latest book, “Ed Muskie: Made in Maine,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Lithgow Public Library. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
The program will take place in the Reading Room and is free and open to the public.
Published by Tilbury House, the biography traces Edmund “Ed” Muskie’s life from modest beginnings to future greatness.
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Muskie’s birth on March 28, 1914, Witherell follows Muskie’s life and career through his two terms as governor of Maine.
Born in Rumford in Maine’s western foothills, Muskie seemed to have understood from boyhood that he had another destiny to fulfill. His aspirations for higher office in postwar Maine seemed unrealistic, yet he became the state’s first Democratic governor in 20 years – and only the second since World War I – while rebuilding the state’s Democratic Party along the way.
Witherell was born in Muskie’s hometown of Rumford. He is also the author of the nonfiction titles, “Bicycle History,” “L.L. Bean: The Man and His Company,” and “When Heroes Were Giants: 100 Tours de France.” The Lewiston resident is a master Maine guide and an avid cyclist.
