WEST PARIS — Many people in the West Paris community and the Western Oxford Hills are able to share that their father, grandfathers and even their fathers, were part of the great logging heritage of this area.
As part of its yearlong commitment to “Celebrating the Maine Woods,” and with the generous help of the Bethel Historical Society, the West Paris Library is displaying a collection of photographs depicting the heyday of logging. These are exceptional photos, from as early as 1908, of men working with a pair of horses to haul logs, logs on the river drive, a log jam, sawmills and the rough reality of the logging camps.
The photos are copies of the original prints, and have been shared from the extensive collection of the Bethel Historical Society. They will be on display at the West Paris Public Library as part of West Paris Old Home Days, whose theme this year is “A Step Back in Time Honoring Our Town.”
The exhibit opens on Friday, June 13, and will continue through August.
Visit the West Paris Library during open hours from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 1:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
