KENNEBUNK — Kennebunk police say that have charged an Old Orchard Beach man with criminal threatening in connection to the notes signed “pervert” that were left in two Ross Road mailboxes last week.

Lt. Dan Jones said Robert C. Simkowitz, 39, of 148 Temple Ave. in Old Orchard Beach was charged with two counts of criminal threatening for the Ross Road letters. A third letter was found in Arundel Monday, but Jones said any charge in that case will come from the York County Sheriff’s Office.

“We are sure it’s him,” Jones said.

Simkowitz is scheduled to appear in Biddeford District Court on Sept. 3.

Jones said the Old Orchard Beach Police Department served Simkowitz with the summons for the two misdemeanor charges. Because the charges Simkowitz faces are misdemeanors, he was not arrested, not required to post bail and is not being held in jail.

The Kennebunk community has been on the lookout for the “pervert” suspect since last week, when word of the letters spread.

Police say Simkowitz left threatening notes in the mailboxes of two Kennebunk families June 3.

At least one of the notes read, “I will not stay away from your kids. Your friend, pervert.”

Jones said the letters were hand-delivered to the mailboxes that evening by Simkowitz on foot.

One resident’s home security camera caught the suspect on tape.

A third “pervert” letter was received on Portland Road in Arundel Monday morning, according to Deputy Sheriff Bill King.

Jones said the department received a tip from a citizen that led them to Simkowitz.

“We’d like to thank all citizens who called in an effort to help,” Jones said, adding that the OBB police and sheriff’s office also provided assistance.
