WILTON — Townspeople at Monday’s annual town meeting will consider enacting a new dog control ordinance and decide how they want the town to handle waste.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, in the cafeteria at Academy Hill School. The Board of Selectmen will provide a barbecue at 5:30 p.m.

Among the 50 warrant articles is one to repeal the dog ordinance and approve the Town of Wilton Dog Control Ordinance. The new one updates practices and language, according to the warrant.

Voters also will be asked to allow town officials to explore other options for handling household trash, which is normally taken to the town Transfer Station and Recycling Center. Options could include paying a private company for disposal, enforcement of mandatory recycling or paying a fee for each bag of trash, according to the warrant.

After looking at all options in the coming year, a final proposal would come before voters at the 2015 town meeting.

The town budget includes $260,520 for operation of the transfer station and recycling. After discussing the cost, the Board of Selectmen decided the town meeting was a good place for townspeople to decide the matter.

Another article will ask voters to allow municipal officers to charge a fee for disposal of demolition debris. Construction debris was up 100 tons this year. The town does not charge for it, Town Manager Rhonda Irish previously said.

Townspeople also will consider raising and appropriating $480,950 for the Police Department, $130,406 for the Fire Department, $795,366 for the Highway Department and $76,459 for the recreation program.

The sum of $317,000 is requested for capital paving and includes proposed projects for this year. Some small repairs to roads and a second-year payment on the town’s road bond also are included.

For the second of four years, voters will consider appropriating funds for a capital account to pay for a property revaluation and equalization. The amount requested is $56,250. Field work is expected to begin this year and to be completed in time for 2016 tax bills.

Town reports and copies of the dog control ordinance are available at the Town Office.
