LEWISTON — Northeast Chapter of the National Destroyer Escort Sailors Association will hold a Destroyer Escort Sailors Memorial Service on Saturday, June 21, at the LA Veterans Memorial Park .
The DESA organization is comprised of regional chapters nationally. The Northeast Chapter meets four times per year, at various locations throughout Maine.
The meetings usually combine a guest speaker covering a nautical topic and a lunch-style meal.
June 21 is Destroyer Escort Day in Maine, as decreed by legislative proclamation.
The last Destroyer Escort was built in the 1970s and the last Destroyer Escort serving as part of the active U.S. Naval fleet was decommissioned in the late 1990s.
The Northeast Chapter was founded in 1996. The membership rolls have been depleted by age of the World War II veterans who served aboard the DE’s when they were plentiful.
The Northeast Chapter will meet at the LA Veterans Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m. There will be an observance of past members lost in action and deceased members who have passed since the chapter was founded. A luncheon will follow at the Village Inn, 165 High St., Auburn.
