John Y. Stanton, the “grand old man of Bates college,” quietly celebrated his eightieth birthday Tuesday, and many friends took pleasure in calling at his home on Main street, Lewiston, to offer best wishes. Prof. Stanton was called to Lewiston in 1857 as professor of Latin and Greek at Bates college. The institution was then but two years old and since that time, Prof. Stanton has been one of the faculty. Prof. Stanton has not limited his interests to the class-room. He has always had a love of natural history, and invited his students to accompany him on walks into the near-by country for the purposes of bird-study. This interest developed at length into a one-hour course in ornithology given in the freshman year.

This also will permit construction of delivery entrances on that side of the enlarged building.

Jon James and Jim Guiggey believe wieners are a cause worth fighting for. James, program director and morning host for WLAM radio station, and Guiggey, sales manager for the Lee Nissan Used Car Store, decided on Wednesday during a broadcast from the car dealership to form the Maine Hot Dog Alliance. The alliance as of Friday had collected about 50 signatures on a petition to bring back two hot-dog stands near Lake Auburn, one of which had been in business for 16 years before the Maine Department of Transportation made both stands move from their Turner Road location Tuesday.
