OXFORD — Selectmen unanimously re-elected veteran public official Floyd Thayer as chairman of the board Thursday night.

A host of reappointments included filling four vacant seats on the Recreation Committee.

Thayer, who operates a trucking company and repair shop in Oxford, is serving in his fourth term and has held the chairman’s position in at least nine of the past 12 years.

A former member of the Planning Board, Thayer laughed, joking that he was initially elected to the Board of Selectmen because, “I was still standing up when everybody else had the sense to sit down.”

Following Thursday night’s meeting, selectmen praised Thayer’s leadership.

“It’s obvious from tonight’s vote that we’re pleased with Floyd,” Peter Laverdiere said.

Town Manager Michael Chammings noted that, “it’s a bit easier to work with a board when an experienced person helps run the meetings.”

Selectmen Scott Owen was chosen vice chairman.

Selectmen also approved Pamela Lovely, Tracey Cox, Ashley Herrick and Norman Turgeon to three-year terms on the Recreation Committee.

Sharon Gendreau was appointed to the SAD 17 board of directors following the resignation of Faith Gittings.
