DEAR SUN SPOTS: A while back (years?) there was an article in the paper about a local business that did pet cremations. Would you be able to locate that and provide me the name and telephone number? Thank you. — No Name via email

ANSWER: Sun Spots didn’t find a story, but you may be thinking about Fluke’s, which provides pet cremation and other services for bereaved animal lovers.

The company is named after the founder’s dog, Fluke, who inspired them to begin their business when he died and they felt badly about leaving him in the cold, sterile veterinary office.

You can read that story and learn about their services at www.flukesaftercare.com. You can find Fluke’s at 340 Oak Hill Road, Litchfield, 207-268-2912, or toll free at 877-268-2912.

Another option is Gracelawn Cemetery (980 Turner St., Auburn, 207-782-3741), which offers a pet cemetery.

Many veterinarians will also arrange for cremation (they may use Fluke’s?).

If you have lost a pet recently, you have Sun Spots’ sympathy. She and Mr. Sun Spots are still grieving their big, handsome boy kitty, who snuck out at night and was hit by a car just before Thanksgiving.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have an old safe that I have lost the combination to and am looking for information regarding who to contact to open it, a safe cracker. I know it’s empty. Any information appreciated. — Cal Brown, [email protected]

ANSWER: You are not alone. So many people lose their combinations that, according to several websites, many manufacturers are making their new safes with back-up systems. In some cases, the company can provide the combination via email.

You did not say what kind of safe, so Sun Spots can’t be more specific or provide contact information. However, if you have the modelserial number, you might want to search online.

Your other option is, of course, a locksmith. In 2012 the Sun Journal ran a story about a local locksmith and his experiences cracking safes. You can read Dan Hartill’s story at sunjournal.com/news/city/2012/01/23/locksmith-finds-key-lifelong-career/1142956.

The amusing feature relates what Maurice Robichaud of Fortier’s has found when asked to unlock trunks and safes, including everything from dead bodies to a single roll of toilet paper.
