LIVERMORE — Where in the world will reading take you this summer? “Book A Trip,” Treat Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program, is well under way. Registration ends Saturday, June 28.

Participants have already toured North America. Wednesday Story Time (10:30 a.m.) follows the same theme as the Thursday SRP (6 p.m.), but does not repeat any of the stories or crafts. On a recent Wednesday there were polar bears from the far north and lizards from the desert. Thursday featured totem poles from the west coast, maple sugaring from New England and Mexican tissue paper party decorations.

The next stop is South America at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, and at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 26. There may be a Brazilian Carnival.

A very special program will be presented at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 1. The Chewonki Foundation will come with their Batmobile to present “Bats of the World.” Bats comprise nearly one-quarter of the world’s approximately 4,000 mammal species, yet humans continue to fear and misunderstand them.

Introducing participants to fruit bats and to the live, non-releasable Big Brown Bat helps to dispel common myths about these flying mammals. The engaging slide show illustrates the role of bats in ecosystems from the Maine woods to the South American rain forests. Participants leave the program with an appreciation for the tremendous diversity of bats in the world and for their irreplaceable niche in natural ecosystems.

All programs are free and open to the public.

There will be no Thursday session on July 3 due to Independence Day on Friday. The library will be closed on the Fourth.

On Thursday, July 10, guest presenter Theresa Timberlake will take attendees on a tour of Africa. Theresa brings inspired crafts and great fun to every event.

For teen readers, the library has summer reading covered. Spruce Mt. High School Library has provided its “You’ve Got to Read This” list and the library has the books waiting for readers. Find them in the online catalog at treat.biblionix.com/atoz/catalog. Reserve titles and come in to pick them up.

The summer project for adults features the four finalist titles for the Maine Readers’ Choice Award: “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt, “Benediction” by Kent Haruf, “Transatlantic” by Colum McCann and “The Golem and the Jinni” by Helene Wecker. During the first two weeks of September, vote for your favorite at the library or on the Maine Readers’ Choice Award website, www.mainereaderschoiceaward.org. For more information on this award, contact the library or go to that website.
