FARMINGTON — A group gathered this past Friday at the Farmington Community Center “to sing just for the joy of it,” organizer Eileen Liddy said.

They enjoyed it so much that they decided to continue meeting weekly to just sing, she said.

The meeting day has changed. The group will now meet from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. on Mondays instead of Fridays at the Community Center on Middle Street. The singing group will next meet on Monday, June 30. All are welcome to join.

Liddy said in a statement that she began the sessions because “she loves to sing, but can’t carry a tune unless she sings with other people and she can’t sing harmony.”

The free group gathers to provide an opportunity for people like Liddy to sing with others. Those who can carry a tune and sing harmony are encouraged to attend, she said.

It’s also for people who don’t want to make a commitment to a singing group but just want to sing, she said.

The idea is an outgrowth of a Gold LEAF program from a couple of years ago, she said. Many participants were from Farmington, and the local center would mean less traveling for them. She’s also hoping the sessions will continue on a long-term basis. The room in the basement at the Farmington Community Center provides a nice, warm shelter for the gathering.

Those who have a musical instrument are asked to bring it with them if they can.

Liddy also asks participants to bring the lyrics for three or four songs that they would like to sing with other people. At least four or five copies of each song are needed, she said. While people may know the melody, they may not know all the words — having several copies allows everyone to sing along, she added.

The gathering meets in the basement of the Farmington Community Center at 126 Middle St. Use the basement door on the right (apartment) side of the building. The meeting room is on the left.
