LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women, a day drop in center for women in Lewiston, announces its schedule of programs for July. The center’s summer hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It will be closed for vacation days July 14-25.

Watch for information about a special project being planned called “The Peasant Pantry Cafe” to be launched on July 9. Returning twice in August, it will be a simple luncheon meal offered by the center to invited and other guests. Many countries have a one-dish sustenance meal that is affordable and healthy. Each “Peasant Pantry” meal will come from a different country and be served in a single dish.

Returning to the center this summer is Cindy Leavitt, aka the “Toothfairy.” She will be available all day Tuesday, July 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for free teeth cleaning. Sign up ahead of time at the center. Cindy will return on Aug. 4.

Linda Hamilton also returns this summer and will host a belly dancing day on July 2. Make a jingly scarf in the morning and play with the basics of belly dancing that afternoon.

Other special events include a trip to pick strawberries at Roaring Brook Farm on the 7th (sign-up required) and two craft days focused on sunflower crafts on July 1 and 8. These crafts will be sold at the center’s table at the farmers market in late August.

A book club is forming and for its first book will read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. Read the book over summer vacation. The group will gather in August to discuss it. It is the story of a remarkable woman who went from poverty, to being a world famous author and poet. She died recently. In this autobiography, Angelou tells the story of her early life that included abuse, loneliness, loss of parents and other traumas. In the end it is a story of triumph. The center has three copies available and it can be borrowed from the local libraries.

The center is taking registrations for the next “Cooking Matters” series, led by the Nutrition Center of Maine. When there are at least six participants, the dates will be scheduled.

The monthly bingo will be at 10 a.m. on July 29, followed by the July birthday party. The Art Van will be at the center at 10 a.m. on July 30 and the monthly clothing give-away is set for the 31st, also at 10.

The weekly Writing Workshop with Pat Gardiner continues each Monday morning at 10 with the addition of a singing circle time the half hour before. The monthly Playing with Poetry class offered by Kathryn Tracy is scheduled for 12:30 on July 29. This session includes gently experiencing poems through both reading and writing.

On July 7 at 12:30, guest speaker Diane Dillion will lead a class called “You Can Do It Too!” A parent of a special needs child, and a mom who lives with mental illness, she will share her story and offer tricks that can help keep you going and give you a more positive outlook.

Wednesday afternoons at 12:30 each week are dedicated to nurturing the “inner spirit” through experiences like mandala making, spiritual conversation or guided meditation.

Support for family caregivers is available on Tuesdays at 11:30 and a weekly Al-Anon group, the only one in Lewiston, meets on Wednesdays at 5:30. The BLT group for bisexual, lesbian and transgendered women and their friends or family will meet on Thursday, July 31, at 3 p.m.

For a full calendar of events, see www.wisdomswomen.org. All women are welcome, programs are offered free of charge and no appointments are needed. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily and the center has a shower available for use.

The center is continually in need of donations of hygiene items which they give away. Please only full size, unopened, basic items. Since the center has requests from up to 50 individual women each month, regular contributions of these supplies is very needed.

If you have questions, or are interested in volunteering, contact the executive director, Klara Tammany, at 513-3922. Donations can be written to Trinity Church/Wisdom and sent to The Center for Wisdom’s Women at PO Box 1016, Lewiston 04243. Trinity serves as a supporting partner and fiscal agent for the center.
